First 4 days of Midsummer Sail
The regatta started on Thursday at 13:15 for us. Since then we have traveled over 380 nautical miles and are now next to Gotland.
After the historical wooden boat in Wismar fired the cannon as starting signal for our group, we made our way up north, creeping against a light north wind of 5 to 8 knots.
After a few hours we were on the last spot. We learned that we can trim the sails as much as we want, sailing close to the wind (close hauled) with less then 12 knots with our boat, a Bavaria Cruiser 34 we get beaten by pretty much every boat in the field.
During our first 24h of sailing we traveled 88.2 nautical miles (1 nautical mile = 1852 meter).
The days after, our position the in field improved. As did our two next 24h runs (98 nm and 111 nm) before the wind at Öland/Gotland got quieter and quieter, leaving us with 83 nm and in our first 6 hours today, we traveled only 9.8 nm so far. Of course this is not the weather you wish for in a regatta, but the calmness on a completely flat sea does make up for it in some way.
And cooking gets a lot easier when the boat is upright then at 30° or more on its side.
Lastly I wouldn't have written today if it weren't for the lull (Flaute).
I'll end with a few more pictures
If you want to follow along the race: https://www.midsummersail.com/gps/ our boat name is Hummel.
