Experiments in note taking
I have started taking notes more diligently over the past month after exploring Andy Matuschak's public notes. Since then I got more aware of how limiting I now find the blog post format I have published so far (mixed travel reports, book reviews and random thoughts) is. Blog posts are great for capturing what I have seen or done recently, the way I formulated their titles and mixed contents however makes it hard to embed them in a web of useful explanations.
The most important pointers about note titles and content came from the following notes:
- https://notes.andymatuschak.org/Evergreen note titles are like APIs
- https://notes.andymatuschak.org/Prefer note titles with complete phrases to sharpen claims
- https://notes.andymatuschak.org/Taxonomy of note types
- https://notes.andymatuschak.org/Evergreen notes should be concept-oriented
One thing that surprised me was how much I enjoyed ordering my thoughts in more atomic notes with carefully chosen titles versus putting everything together in blog posts. That joy was also what made me coming back to expand my notes instead of just having tried out yet another note taking software.
I plan to publish my notes. From then on I will blog about experiences and what I'm up to now on this blog and put things I learned in the notes.
